A DENBIGHSHIRE man will be attending the ‘Oscars for visual effect’ in LA after becoming one of the nominees.

Ed Bruce, who grew up just outside of Trefnant, has been nominated for a visual effects society award.

The 10th annual VES Awards will be held on Tuesday, February 7 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, LA, when Mr Bruce will find out if he has won the award for outstanding supporting visual effects in a broadcast program.

A former Ysgol Twm or Nant and Denbigh High School pupil, 33 year-old Mr Bruce moved to Ireland in 2000, where he has lived ever since.

Mr Bruce said he is ‘honoured’ to have been nominated for the award.

“The visual effects society is a highly esteemed collection of people, therefore to be considered and nominated is pretty tremendous.

“This is a great personal moment for me and my family.

“It's a great honour which I'm incredibly proud to represent the hard work and efforts of my wonderful team of artists.”

Mr Bruce’s career began his career as a runner in a post production house when he moved to Dublin.

After a few months running, making teas and handing out lunches he was moved out into a junior 3D role.

“There I slowly built up my skill level and contributed to various commercials,” said Mr Bruce.

“I then moved to Ireland's biggest post production facility Screen Scene, where I continued as a 3D generalist until I moved up to head the 3D dept.”

Mr Bruce has won various awards for commercial work, internationally and within Ireland.

After a number of years Mr Bruce found himself doing more on-set supervision on film, broadcast shows and commercials.

“I then became screen scenes visual effects supervisor,” he said.

“In 2010 HBO brought Game of Thrones to Ireland, I became one of the Visual Effects Supervisors on it.

“This meant I spent time on-set and then building a team of artists to tackle the VFX (visual effects) shots.

“We had compositors, 3d artists, rotoscopers and matchmovers.

“Game of Thrones has become a big hit and in 2011 I was part of the Emmy nominated team that went to LA for the awards.

“We were beaten by Boardwalk Empire, but were delighted to be there.”

Mr Bruce’s family, including his father Roger, a former teacher at Denbigh High School, and mother Laraine still live in Denbighshire.

“I still very much see myself from Denbigh, and proud,” said Mr Bruce.

“I got my education from the good teachers at Denbigh High School, which certainly have helped with where I am now,” he added.
