AN OSWESTRY Olympian is celebrating her success after winning the England Athletics indoor pentathlon.

Gemma Weetman, 24, struck gold at the England Indoor Combined Events Championships held in Sheffield last week, taking the senior women’s title after leaping to a new personal best in the high jump.

Gemma also surged ahead in the 800 metres to come home in a time of two minutes 17 seconds, and also performed well in the 60 metres hurdles as well as the long jump and shot putt to win with an overall score of 3,997 points.

Her display has seen her selected for the UK Athletics Great Britain and Northern Ireland team’s trip to the Czech Republic at the end of the month, and having also won the outdoor heptathlon event last year, she said: “I am quite pleased to have won but I am also ready to improve my performance at the next meeting.
“I have not done pentathlon about four years, so getting to see all the girls and feel the atmosphere was brilliant.
“It was great to be competing indoors again too,” she added.

Gemma is now looking forward to being a member of the British team selected to compete at the Senior Combined Events International in Prague where the eight-strong team will compete against competitors from Czech Republic, France, Netherlands and Spain.
