Liverpool trainee Holden nothing back at TNS

THE New Saints have dipped into the transfer market to bring former Liverpool trainee Luke Holden back to the club.

The 23-year-old left-sided midfielder rejoins TNS, who initially released him in 2008, having also spent time on Tranmere Rovers’ books and at Charlton Athletic before making 15 appearances for Wrexham as they reached the Blue Square Premier play-offs last season.

Since then Holden has trained with Chester without making a first team outing, but was denied a Welsh Premier League return against Newtown in Saints’ last game after what TNS chairman Mike Harris described as an “antiquated Welsh FA ruling.”

The Welsh FA lags behind the rest of Europe as being the only Football Association to decree a player can only turn out for a club at least one working day after being signed, scuppering any Saints’ plans to utilise his talents in the Bank Holiday Monday fixture.

However, Holden could have the chance to stretch his legs in a couple of friendlies to be played behind closed doors as TNS bid to stay fresh ahead of their Welsh FA Cup clash with Newport County on January 28.
