GARETH OWEN has ruled himself out of the running for the vacant director of football role at Airbus – but Steve Walters and Lee Jones have thrown their hats into the ring.
First team coach Owen is in temporary charge of the side with Andrew Thomas – another man rumoured to be interested in the post – after Craig Harrison left the club to join The New Saints on Friday.
Owen was player/boss at Airbus for three years between 2005-08 before leaving for Rhyl, but has rejected the opportunity to apply for the director of football role.
“I’m not in a position to apply for the job,” declared Owen. “It is only natural I suppose that I will be linked but as far as I am concerned I hope Andrew Thomas applies for it.”
Despite not being in a position to take the job himself, Owen would be more than happy to work with whoever is appointed to replace Harrison.
He said: “I am enjoying myself at Airbus and I am happy to work with whoever comes in.
“Whoever does come in must take the club forward and it is important to get the right person for the job.”
Jones, who currently works for Wrexham’s football foundation scheme, has confirmed that he has applied for job.
The ex-Wrexham and Liverpool striker spent the final few months of last season at Prestatyn as first team coach having left Cefn Druids in April 2010.
Towards the end of his tenure at Druids, alongside good friend Waynne Phillips, things turned sour, but Jones is ready to step back into management when the right job comes along.
“I have applied for the job. I sent my CV to them on Monday,” he confirmed. “It is a well run club and I have heard nothing but good reports about it.”
Jones has the Uefa Pro licence required by Airbus, while Walters, who led Rhos Aelwyd to a fourth placed finish in the Cymru Alliance last term, is hoping to impress the Wingmakers’ chairman Paul McKinlay and chief operating officer Stewart Roberts.
“The job really appeals to me because it is a big club,” he said. “I have belief in my ability and I am aiming as high as I can.
“I have been linked to a lot of jobs and spoke with Conwy United, but I know I can manage at a higher level.”
As well as Walters, Jones and Thomas, Alan Morgan, Andy Cale, Huw Griffiths and Alan Bickerstaffe have all been linked to the post.
