FIRES will light up the coast to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Towns across the UK will be lighting beacons to mark 60 years of Queen Elizabeth II's reign as part of next year's Jubilee celebrations, which will take place from June 2 until June 5 - and Llandudno and Conwy will be joining in.

The nationwide Jubilee Beacons event will take place on Monday June 4, with the Queen lighting the national beacon after a concert at Buckingham Palace.

Cllr Greg Robbins, the Mayor of Llandudno, said the beacon on the Orme had been kept "safe and well" by Ronnie Jones of the Great Orme Summit complex, and would be reinstated for use at the end of May.

The 2.5metre tall gas-powered beacon was also lit for the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2001, as well as for the millennium celebrations on New Year's Eve and Day across 1999 into 2000, and again New Year's Eve and Day between 2000 to 2001.

Mr Jones said that if the weather was clear, the light from the beacon could be seen in places as far afield as Bangor and Rhyl.

Conwy Town Council hopes the town will provide a beacon of its own to light during the festivities, and has approached the Welsh heritage body CADW to see if it could be sited on the castle.

Colwyn Bay Town Council will not be holding any official celebrations, but will be making funding available for community groups who want to commemorate the Jubilee.
