To prevent having to fix washing machine problems caused by using too much detergent or forgoing regular maintenance, many homeowners clean and inspect their machines at least once a month. Still, washing machines sometimes break, but many problems can be quickly and simply repaired by qualified technicians.
A strong smell coming from a washer can indicate that an accumulation of detergent has soured inside the machine. Before calling for service, some manufacturers recommend running the washing machine one or more times without clothing on its largest load size to wash away the excess detergent.
Caked detergent inside the machine is especially likely if the machine is often used for small loads.
Adding bleach or vinegar to the washer during an empty run can also help temporarily or permanently fix washing machine odours.
In fact, some washing machine repair specialists recommend occasionally cleaning the machine by allowing the washer to completely fill with water, then turning it off. Adding as much as two gallons of vinegar to the water in washer and allowing the mixture to stand in the machine overnight can help dissolve some of the accumulated detergent.
It is a good idea to run the machine empty on its largest setting once a month with one cup of bleach to help maintain freshness and eliminate mildew, discolourations of the tub and dirt as well. Some manufacturers recommend this procedure or something similar to maintain the washer.
Wiping down the outside surface of the machine with a wet cloth is also a good idea to remove spot-treatment overspray that can damage the machine’s finish.
Other monthly activities are more related to inspection than maintenance.
Cracked fill hoses first leak a small amount of water, but if not repaired they can spray large amounts of water and cause damage to the home. Because most homeowners leave these hoses turned on all the time, damaged lines can spay water for hours or days if the washing machine is in an area that is not visited daily. Changing hoses yearly and inspecting them for cracks and damage monthly can prevent costly home damage. Some people even turn off the water to these hoses on days they will not be using the machine.
Inspecting the drain hose is also a good idea. Even the amount of water lost through a broken drain hose can be enough to damage flooring and walls.
Some problems cannot be prevented by regular maintenance and inspection, however. When a washing machine will not work or malfunctions, some people are inclined to hastily buy a new one, especially if the machine is old, but many problems can be fixed by a qualified repair technician.
Repair technicians are skilled in ways to fix washing machine problems and keep homeowners from having to buy new machines before it is necessary.
With good upkeep, washers can last for years and clean their last loads just as well as their first. A little prevention and the willingness to call a technician when necessary is all it takes to get the most usage possible from these effort-saving machines.
