SUPPORTERS of the proposed canal marina restoration in Cefn Mawr are being urged to attend a special meeting.

A public hearing for Wrexham Council’s local development plan (LDP) is scheduled to start on January 25 and campaign organiser David Metcalfe is urging local people to show their support for the canal project.

The proposal to reinstate the Plas Kynaston Canal with a 60 berth marina on the site of the former Flexsys factory behind the Queen’s Hotel in Cefn Mawr is one of the items that will be under consideration.

The Plas Kynaston Canal and Marina Group first submitted the plans in June, 2010 and asked for them to be included in the authority’s then forthcoming LDP.

They whipped up the support of thousands, who submitted letters in favour at the end of the public consultation on the LDP in March.

The dates have now been announced for an independent examination of Wrexham’s LDP by the Planning Inspectorate Wales.

Mr Metcalfe said: “This will link Cefn Mawr to the inland waterway network and establish the village itself as the visitor centre for the area and the Pontcysyllte aqueduct.

“This link is essential to foster commercial enterprise within the community and turn the economy of a presently hard hit and downtrodden area around, for the benefit of all concerned in the World Heritage Site corridor and the counties of Wrexham and Denbighshire as a whole.”

“We notified Wrexham Council in January and stated we would like to attend the independent public examination in 2012.

“We would also like to invite as many people to attend, so they can see where their vote is going. The hearing is open to the public and we believe in putting our cards on the table,” he added.

The Welsh Government has appointed Hywel Wyn Jones of the Planning Inspectorate Wales to conduct the examination which will include a series of hearings over four weeks.

- A talk on the Plas Kynaston Canal will be given by Peter Brown of the Inland Waterways Association at the Narrowboat Inn (Maestermyn Marina), Ellesmere Road, Whittington, on Monday at 7.30pm. Members and non-members are welcome.

And will no doubt bring riches beyond the wildest dreams...to a few....while the majority...ie the taxpayer will bear the burden of any redevelopement....it never ceases to amaze me how often the cost to the taxpayer is overlooked in all the excitement promises of entering the promised land of milk and money

a.cahill..hi..the one big thing these enthusiasts are forgetting about is the fact that Flexsys have no intention of allowing the ground to be developed because it would cost hundreds of millions to clean up and make safe.As a very minimum there should be a major health and safety investigation of the site.

When was the old Plas Kynaston canal destroyed? I heard the original Monsanto works tapped into it's flow for water, and it was part of the original plan to build the canal through Wrexham, Brymbo and on to Chester.

"entering the land of milk and money", sounds like a civil service job with a non contributory index linked pension.

Monsanto constructed a concrete canal about 1949 and this was used for quite a number of years as a Lido. The wter was never taken off the canal but by pipe from the River Dee lower down stream from the Aqueduct and pumped up. The pumping station is still there.

I believe Telfords original plan was to run the canal through to link with the chester end of the nantwich canal system (hence the name Ellesmere port) it is a pity it didnot come to fruition, wrexham would have been a more prosperous area, time it was re-introduced and bring more visitors to the region, better than spending all our taxes in cardiff!!!!

There is an interesting map of the proposed canal on the Wikipedia Article for the Ellesmere Canal! Looks like it would have been west of Birse Farm by quite a way; probably around the Bryn Offa area. I can imagine the town having a few Textile mills at the time if it had been built.

a cahill - you are a cost to the taxpayer, does that mean that we can axe you?

  10. Posted by: liberty1 at 20:04 on 10 November 2011 Report

and no response from cahill, when the going gets tough???????

  11. Posted by: a cahill at 09:53 on 12 November 2011 Report

ericcartman...likewise you and anybody who is in receipt of Working/Child tax credits, disabled and elderly people, parents with school going children,NHS patients,Cllrs AMs MPsand MEPs, all of the above being a cost to the taxpayer, as you can see I wouldl be in pretty good company if the axe were to fall

ericcartman...nearly forgot....Bankers, Teachers, Public Sector workers...what is the response from the WAGs Business Minister...she regrets Capitalism and hankers for a system of Communism that collapsed years ago...so we're all in this together as capitalism faces the propect of falling into the same hole as socialism has and taking with it the semblance of democracy we all live under

"we're all in this together", where have I heard that before?, I remember, Camermoron, the multi millionaire. Mind you a non contributory index linked pension helps soften the blow whilst the elderly/disabled, people on tax credits and the rest pay the price for the mess created by the bankers.

Somebody is up to mischief by removing comment, I think someone is hoping to stir up trouble by doing so.
