When looking for a job you have to be realistic. A combination of the current financial climate and the growing number of graduates leaving university each year means that although you should be hard-working and optimistic, you also have to be aware of your own limitations.

As such, sit down and work out your strengths and weaknesses. From this simple starting point you will already have a better idea of what career you should be setting your sights on.

If, for example, you value yourself as someone who would work well with people then you may be well suited to a career in sales. These kinds of jobs are all about connecting with others on a personal level, so if you feel this is a particular skill of yours then you should start looking for sales jobs.

There are many different sectors involved in sales such as media, retail, insurance and advertising to name but a few. The key to a good sale is a positive attitude, charm, wit, and understanding the individual needs of your client – each sale is an exciting new challenge that can offer significant personal satisfaction as well as performance related bonuses.

You could also start looking for receptionist jobs. Again, this would require you to use all of your people skills – a quality that not everyone has and which could see you going a long way.

So if you’re currently looking at career paths, make sure you understand yourself better than anyone else. Know your limitations and acknowledge your strengths so you can make an informed decision which is more likely to benefit you in the long run.
