Touring the United Kingdom or other parts of Europe by caravan can make a lot of sense. Travelling by caravan is economically sound, as it saves you the cost of train and bus tickets as well as the expense of pricey hotel rooms. There are a few ways of managing a caravan vacation, depending on your destination, what you want to do while you travel and your budget.
One way to acquire the vehicle that will become your "home on the road" is to look for a used
caravan for sale. Use the caravan for the duration of your trip, then sell it to someone else or, if you can arrange it, back to the dealership. This method of caravan travel makes sense only if you are staying on the road for a month, two months or more.
Another way to economically get a caravan to drive is to rent or borrow one. You may be able to find one through word of mouth, particularly if you know people in the area to which you will be travelling. Check websites dedicated to travelling, as well; this may get you in contact with like-minded individuals who also enjoy travelling by caravan, and these people may have suggestions for borrowing or renting a caravan for a low price.
Once you have a way to get your caravan, it is time to plan your trip. Do not schedule a tight itinerary; there is no need, because you do not need hotel reservations. While it is good to have a general idea of where you would like to go, as well as a list of places that you absolutely must see, part of the travelling-by-caravan experience includes not being afraid to go off of the beaten path. If you or your family wants to follow a different route, or to stop in a town that you stumbled on along the way, driving a caravan through Europe allows you to do that.
Whether you are renting or borrowing a caravan, or whether you have found a caravan for sale, you will find that your trip is much less expensive than it would be if you were travelling in a more traditional manner. While you do have to pay for gasoline, you will not have to eat in as many restaurants, because you can purchase your food at local markets, and prepare it either in your caravan or at a campsite. You also will save on hotel rooms, which can be very expensive, particularly during peak tourist season, such as during the summer. You may find that travelling for several months at a time by caravan is much less expensive than even a two- or three-week holiday with a rental car or train tickets plus hotel or hostel rooms.
If you have gotten a caravan for sale be sure to leave yourself some time at the end of your trip to sell it. Remember that preparation for such a trip is key, and have a wonderful time on your caravan holiday!
