Council sends out hard-hitting message to education minister

PLANS to strip Glyndwr University of its independence are not based on robust evidence and should not go ahead.

That is the strong message Wrexham councillors will send out to Welsh education minister Leighton Andrews next week.

At their meeting on Tuesday, members of the powerful executive board will give their official response to proposals for a radical education shake-up.

The Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) recommends Glyndwr loses its independence and becomes part of a group led by Bangor and Aberystwyth.

The suggestion has caused a storm of protest from residents, business leaders, students and politicians.

Hundreds of people have backed the Leader’s Hands Off Our Uni campaign, sending in coupons that will be passed to Mr Andrews next week.

John Davies, Wrexham Council’s head of lifelong learning, said of the HEFCW proposal: “Overall, members do not think it is a good idea.

“They are supportive of Glyndwr’s strategy of independence. They are also very concerned the proposals are not based on robust evidence.

“They feel Glyndwr is important not just to Wrexham but the whole of the wider region, and that the needs of the region would not be effectively met by a management arrangement based up in the North West.”

The executive board’s response will be sent to Mr Andrews in time to meet next Wednesday’s consultation deadline.

Council leader Cllr Ron Davies said: “When the board last discussed this matter there was unanimous opposition to the proposal.

“The corridor served by Glyndwr is not just important to Wrexham but to the whole of North Wales.”

Ministers doing what they do best...take something that is working...tinker with it...make a complete mess of it...call it rationalisation, centralisation,or any other word ending in isation and destroy it without regard to the real cost to Nth East Wales...remember that is the same crowd who took money away to pay for students tuition fees at any UK Uni that would go a long way to keeping education and health services at their present levels...not great forward planning either

As far as the Welsh Government are concerned..... north Wales is a burden, its not just education , and Where is Aled Roberts in all this... not a peep... you would have thought he would have said somethin... or is he towing the party line.... and in agreeance with it.

If you seen the money getting wasted in Glyndwr as I see it no wonder Leighton Andrews has steped in to sort them out just like the FE colleges huge savings are now being made through less duplication of highly paid staff who done no more than travel Wales going to meetings and having a free lunch..

This is exactly what is needed for Wrexham - a sense of community and strong commitment for developing the area into something we can all be proud of. In a very positive step the council is joining local people, students and businesses and there is a glimmer that we can work together to promote Wrexham.

Why is Glyndwr not speaking out in its own defence? It can hardly expect others to fight for its survival if it whimpers quietly behind closed doors. You are supposed to be academics? Time to demonstrate some originality of thought and that you possess a skeleton of steel, unintimidated by the academic autocracy of yesterdays educational elite.

Independent status is a position worth fighting to retain, but will require more than just a mild discussion over a pot of tea and cucumber sandwiches. Fight fire with fire and forget any rules of combat, if you are totally committed to an independent pathway.

STOP PRESS! John Davies now cares 'what members think'- does that apply to sixth forms and school transport too? This is a guy who when the members don't agree with him runs as fast as he can to Cardiff!

Omg! Just read that other bit about robust evidence. Is your evidence to shut Penley and Ruabon 6 forms robust? Or your socially engineering driven School Transport policy? Do us a favour and let somebody else speak for education in Wrexham - you're making us, and yourself, a laughing stock!

It is also important to define what is Council with regard to the proposal....its not that long ago that the executive board voted to support the Welsh Govt driven sub regional strategy...led by Aled Roberts...who now represents us at the Senedd and is a Cllr...given his speech at the Eistedfod and subsequent denials there is little hope that he will support anything other than a merger for Glyndwr
