NANTGLYN 6
CAERWYS 2
GERAINT Jones bagged more than his fair share of goals as Nantglyn took another stride towards winning their first piece of silverware for five years.
Not since claiming the double in 2006 have Nantglyn been in the winner’s circle, but a brace of strikes from their version of Geraint Jones formed an important part of the Shield win over Caerwys.
The Flintshire visitors managed to have the final word on the night, though, as the Caerwys Geraint Jones converted a late penalty.
A determined goal had the away side in front as top scorer Nick Voyle muscled his way beyond two challenges before netting.
Geraint Jones managed to draw the hosts level 10 minutes later, while two goals in 10 minutes before the break swung the tie in Nantglyn’s favour.
Bryn Jones and Gareth Lewis were the players on target, and when Lewis scored his second early in the second period, there was no way back for Caerwys.
“For the first 35 minutes we played quite well, even after they equalised,” said joint-Caerwys manager John Owens.
Adam Eden’s rasping effort made it five, before Geraint Jones’ second of the night completed the Nantglyn tally.
Caerwys had the final word, though, and after Tom Rogers was fouled in the box, Geraint Jones scored from the spot.
“We put up a strong challenge, but we just ran out of steam,” added Owens.
Adam Eden, Alun Williams, Josh Jones and Gerwyn Lloyd were impressive home performers.
The outstanding Nick Voyle was the Caerwys man of the match.
