Rhayader Carnival starts this weekend

SPANNING eight days, the annual Rhayader Carnival will have many events, some of which you will never see anywhere else in the world.


Beginning the 2011 carnival week will be the Green Fair on Smithfield and the leisure centre on Saturday, July 9 from 10am.


At this year’s fair there will be a solar powered music stage, powered by a truck with built on solar panels which rotate to catch maximum amount of sun at any time.


There is to be a charity teddy bear parachute jump from the top of St Clements Church. Bring your bears in fancy dress from noon onwards.


On Sunday July 10, the junior and senior treasure hunts on foot around Rhayader begin at 10am.


At 11am, there will be the Rhayader & District Vintage Club Show in Smithfield and a procession around town at 4pm. Admission is £2.50.


Later is the car treasure hunt starting at 5.30pm to 7.30pm, from the car park and finishing at the Bear’s Head.


The Songs of Praise takes place at the leisure centre, commencing at 6pm.
Starting Monday, July 11 will be an exhibition at St. Clements Church, 1pm-5pm daily.


At 5.30pm is the Family Sports, including mini cycle events on The Groe.


Also on Monday there is the annual duck race with prizes of £35, £20 and £10 sponsored by Garden Service Rhayader.


This will be followed by a grand quiz at the rugby club at 8pm. Teams of three, with entries on the evening £3 per team.


On Tuesday, July 12, there is the Gwastedyn Hill Race. All competitors have to be aged nine years and over on day of event.


The Amie Smith Perpetual Memorial Trophy will go to the first local lady.


Then on Wednesday, July 13, there is the Teddy Bears Picnic for the under fives, noon to 2pm at the Youth Club.


The World Championship Welly Wangin competition kick-off at 6pm at the Smithfield, sponsored by Cosy Toes Cymru.


The annual Wheel Barrow Race is at 7pm, entries on field -  £4 per pair, 16 years and over on day of event.


At 9.30pm is the ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors’ Competition at the Lamb & Flag. Entrants must be 16 years and over.


On Thursday, July 14 are the five-a-side football competitions at the football club.

Starting at 5.30pm for the juniors, 6.30pm adults. All players must reside within five miles of the Town Clock.


On Friday, July 15 is the much-loved Groe Gathering in Cwmdauddwr, this year organised by the carnival committee. There will be entertainment, stalls and live music.


Saturday, July 16 is carnival day and there will be live music in the town centre from 12.30pm to 2.30pm.
