MORE than 100 Rhos on Sea homes will be protected from flooding thanks to a £300,000 defence initiative.
Work on the River Ganol (East) upstream of the golf course is being carried out by the Environment Agency Wales to rebuild the tidal chamber by the prom and to replace the tidal outfall.
The outfall should prevent the tide from pushing up the Ganol as it is no longer watertight.
This will help prevent the water from backing up during heavy rain, reducing the flood risk for people living by the side of the river further upstream.
A confirmed 121 properties previously at risk of flooding will be protected by the scheme.
Meic Davies, North Wales flood risk manager for Environment Agency Wales, said: "This is an important scheme for people who live with the threat of flooding in Rhos on Sea. People living in these properties will be at less risk after the work we are doing has finished.
"We can not prevent all flooding but we can reduce the likelihood of it happening to people and communities in Wales."
The scheme has been funded by the Welsh Assembly Government.
