A CAMPAIGN supporting the £56 million Smithfield development has sprung up on a social networking website.
On Facebook, the group called 'Oswestry retail park supporters' already has 409 members signed up to support the cinema and retail development, causing much controversy amongst town centre traders.

Members have started discussions on the reasons why the development
should go ahead and also criticise the Chamber of Trade and town centre retailers for their opposition to the current proposals.

Discussion topics include 'Do you agree with Oswestry Chamber of Commerce?', 'The proposed plans', and 'Traders slam development proposals.'

The group features excerpts from the Advertizer and the Advertizer's website and currently has a long list of comments in support of the development.

One Facebook user writes: "I'll build it with my bare hands if that's what it takes!"

why don't these people who are for this development wake up ? The traders and others who are against it are only tring to save what is left of the town. These people who are for the delevolment only need to do a little research to find out what has happend to other towns in the country where out of town developments have gone on i am sure they will be surprised at how dead each town has become.
Let me ask a question they are banging on about a cinema, this town has had two of them they have both closed down through lack of support so what makes them think a cinema will work ?
lets all wake up and spend money on what we have already got and improve the town. It could so good we have a lot of history hear that not a lot of people know about.

I can't believe people have been so blinded by the prospect of gaining a cinema in Oswestry. Essentially it's one enormous carrot on a stick, enabling developers and the town council to slap an enormous retail park on the edge of Oswestry that will do absolutely nothing for the prosperity the town itself. I hope all the people that are signing up to facebook will make sure they visit the cinema every single night of the week and pat themselves on the back when local traders and enterprise are forced out of business. What a special place Oswestry will be then.

Oh my god! How long will it take people to realise the cinema is just a 'sweetener' to soften the blow when our local shops and producers fail?!

We are spoilt in Oswestry with a range of brilliant smaller retailers selling local produce (not to mention the 'bigger names' like Sainsburys, Iceland, M&S Food, Aldi, Somerfield, Fresh Express, Co-op)- why on earth do we need yet another supermarket?!

More and more we are be asked to think about where our goods come from, and how far - how can the Borough claim to champion 'local' business, and potentially deliver the kiss of death with the development proposal at the same time?

Wrexham builds retail parks like its going out of fashion, and where has it got them? Empty offices and retail units!! White elephants!

Wake up and smell the coffee Oswestry - and go to www.clonetownbritain.com for the start.

If you still feel positively about the development after that, I suggest you move to a city - vibrant, lively and community-orientated market towns obviously aren't for you.

Thanks.

It would be interesting to know more about these 392 supporting members !!!!!
There is plenty of scope for redevelopment with in the town itself, we do not need an ' out of town development '. Powis Hall, Bailey Head, and the surrounding area are prime locations for development.
We need to be realistic and bring the town into the 21st century, because as a market town it is dying. Lets support OSWESTRY, and not support building a small town on the outskirts, which would effectively be the last 'nail in the coffin' for our Town of Oswestry.
Support the loyal traders in the town, especially the small independents. PLEASE DO NOT BE FOOLED BY SWEETNERS AND PROMISES. OSWESTRY WILL BE THE LOSER AT THE END OF THE DAY. PLEASE PLEASE GIVE THIS REASONED, LOGICAL THOUGHT, AND SPEAK OUT TO SUPPORT OUR CAMPAIGN.

It sounds wonderful that someone will spend £56m to develop the site but the reality is that Oswestry will pay. The businesses that fold and the lost jobs in the centre will out-weigh the new jobs offered now.

The scale of the supermarket will be similar to the Tesco in Wrexham - massive for a small town. The Town Council refused Sainsbury an out of town store to protect trade in the town centre and are now backing this monster. If this is all about funding the modernisation of the Smithfield market, please can we have some other ideas on the table?

It is clear that people would like a cinema here, though 3 screens are more likely to survive that 5. What we should also be demanding is a fresh start for the covered market. Imagine it open every day - visually interesting, with vibrant businesses, quality foods, a proper delicatessen, a permanent site for the Farmers Market and a really good ground floor coffee bar, opening onto the square. That might stop people from driving to Wrexham.

Well its nice to see the doom merchants have their opinions, how many of the above are under say 40 years old?
Can these people please tell me what the younger people have to do in this town? Let me think..... oh yes go to the pub.

As for the rest of the town its made up of travel agents, estate agents, charity shops, hairdressers and mobile phone shops.

The town has been on its last legs for god knows how long and way before a retail park was mentioned. So what does this tell you?

Its time for Oswestry to move with the times and I know that the elder people of the town will be pulling faces reading this but its the truth.

moldy fruit,

I used to work for companies that would set up sites on social networking to create a favourable view of a company/product. I guarantee that 90% of the 'friends' of the development are colleagues, friends and family of the people working on the pro campaign. Do not beleive that Oswestry is in favour. The response I have had from genuine Oswestrians is pure outrage.

We must all fight for what we love in Oswestry... it's unique, independent shops, cafes and restaurants. I whole-heartedly agree with Katie 79... the cinema is a sweetener. Don't get sucked in by the idea of a cinema. We can have one without all the rest of the life-sucking outlets that accompany it.

*Please enter your comment*The publicity brochure from 'Liberty Mercian Limited' states in large letters on its front cover, 'New Cinema, Shops, Restaurants & Offices for Oswestry'. It should say, 'Massive Supermarket, Chain Stores, Fast Food Outlets & more empty Office Space for Oswestry'.

What a shame that Keviebabe wants to take us back to the out-dated thinking of the 70's - a dead-zone in the middle of town and a half-empty, unimaginative, same-as-everywhere-else development on the bypass. As an oldie (yes, all of 52, Keviebabe) even I am aware of Oswestry having one of the best young music scenes of any small market town, and I would love to have a cinema - IN the town. The world has moved on - so why not join us in looking forward and help us to create an even more vibrant centre of town. Say 'no' to these out-dated plans - Oswestry deserves better.

As the creator of this Facebook page I can categorically say that I do not work for any company associated with this development and I am a hard working, tax paying resident who lives in Oswestry.

I read all of the negative comments and it does make make me question if we are actually talking about the same town.

Do you all really believe that this group is foolish enough just to be led by the proposed Cinema? This group is not just about eating popcorn!

It is about choice for the people who live here who on a regular basis have to spend hard earned money in other towns and cities because we simply do not have the shops to supply our needs and don't have the parking to supply our cars!

The feedback I am recieving from "genuine Oswestrians" is that the proposed developments are a positive idea which would benefit a town which is overwhelmed by cafes and charity shops.

I agree, it would be great to develop the town centre and have an epicentre of vibrancy which we could all enjoy but the reality is the town centre cannot support this so an out of town development is our only hope of better parking, better shops, increased employment, yes - a cinema but lastly and most importantly better choice for residents of a town which has grown dramatically over the last 10 years and a town which is desperate to be dragged into the 21st Century.

Please show your support on our Oswestry Retail Park Supporter! page on Facebook.com - 407 members and growing every day!! Why not add the Advertizer as a friend whilst there!
