For many years there has been a debate swinging back and forth about whether poker is merely a game or is a sport. The debate is usually split between the people that feel that poker does have sporting elements whilst there are others that strongly believe that a sport should have a certain level of physical activity.
So let us tell you just why poker should be classed as a sport!
Poker on the outside may look like it is a simple game that relies mainly on chance, this is totally wrong; poker is an incredibly mental game that involves so much mental strength as well as good levels of emotional strength to be successful.
What you have to remember is that poker can sometimes require a player to play in sessions that can last as long as sixteen hours, with players having to stay focused as well as having a certain level of physical endurance to survive those sessions.
Also, many recognised sports do not in fact involve much physical activity at all.
Fishing, archery, darts hardly make anyone break a sweat but they are considered sport.
If we were to look up the definition of sport, there would be many different ones, yet they all share a few things in common. They all say that a sport is something that is played for enjoyment, is played as a recreation or a pastime and it can have a competitive nature. Would you agree that poker fits into that definition?
Official Mind Sport
In recent times poker has stepped closer to being recognized as a sport, by being accepted in to the International Mind Sport Association. This means that it is now classed in the same way as games like chess, in that they are at the very least mind sports.
Since the dawn of the internet, poker has been spread into our homes via the best online poker sites such as Full Tilt Poker, giving everybody access to one of the most exciting forms of entertainment, which of course can also result in winning money.
People have to realise that whilst poker can be a recreational game, it takes a lot of effort and dedication to get to the very highest level. The best players in the world will sit either at a live table or at their PC online for most of the day in a tournament, which as you can imagine requires a lot of dedication in itself.
If you are one of the players that like to play the game more as a hobby or pastime however, you will find many likeminded players on the lowest stakes tables, so you do not have to worry about playing the better players in the world.
