THEY say never meet your heroes. Well, I’ve spoken to Ryan Dooley from All The Young twice now and I can say that, as the lads get more famous, their passion for music only gets stronger.

Last time I spoke to Ryan following the release of ‘Live At King Tut’s’, he was full of energy and enthusiasm for his band, the lineup of which is completed by his brother Jack, Dave Cartwright and Will Heaney.

Speaking to Ryan just a few hours before All The Young hit the stage in Brighton on May 29, the fire in his belly has increased and his answers to questions have more conviction.

This is a band who have been touring their socks off for months and are now reaping the rewards - with a full studio album under their belt, produced by the masterful Garth Richardson and a summer of festival slots on the horizon, the band have every right to be full of beans.

Even better, the first 5,000 units of the special edition of ‘Welcome Home’, their first full-length studio album, completely sold out, Ryan explained.

“We wanted to make it special but when the label showed us what they’d come up with, we were bowled over,” he said. “Record labels do lots of nice things but they do naughty things too, but this was a nice thing.”

The band have just played shows in Liverpool and London and have slots at V Festival, Wakestock and Rockness coming up over the summer, as well as festivals in Switzerland and Germany.
“It’s going to be a really busy summer which is good, it’s what we wanted,” said Ryan. “It’s our first experience of playing at really big festivals. We’ll be sharing a stage with Noel Gallagher and the Stone Roses and I think that’ll be the highlight of the year.
"They were the bands we grew up listening to, in ‘97 and ‘98 when I first started playing guitar they were the big bands. The kids at school liked the sh***y chart stuff but Oasis were our band.”

When I raised the comparison between Oasis and All The Young, I got the impression it was something Ryan had heard a lot recently.
“We don’t mind the comparison, and I suppose we get it because there’s two brothers in the band and we also have an Irish surname. But it can be easy to be a lazy journalist and compare us. I don’t mind it except when it’s used negatively.”

Moving swiftly on to the new album ‘Welcome Home’, the band have experienced mixed reviews (well, not from yours truly, I loved it).
“We’ve had really good reviews except for the NME, who said it was too polished,” said Ryan. “It is pretty slick but there are no strings or choirs. It’s four lads in a room, it just sounds good. If we weren’t supposed to make a good record someone should have told us!
“These days some people want you to have no ambition. It could have been a lot more polished.”

The band are cracking on regardless with writing new material while they have time between shows.

“You have no bills to pay on tour, no dishes to wash,” said Ryan. “It’s perfect, pottering around at sound check, strumming guitars.”

The next single will be ‘Another Miracle’ which also features, Ryan promised, a very interesting video... Watch this space.

Catch All The Young at the Dot to Dot Festival, Bristol on June 2, Shrewsbury's Severn Cellars & Warehouse on June 8, and Birmingham's O2 Academy on June 18.
