Tanat Theatre’s production of Under Milk Wood is your chance to share ‘seventeen pints of flat, warm, thin, Welsh, bitter beer’ with Dylan Thomas, and to let your imagination slip, wide awake but dreaming, into the life of Llareggub.

By staging the play in the round, the theatre’s production draws the audience into the heart of the small fishing town and onto its cobbled streets to share what, in The Guide Book’s well-thumbed entry concerning Llareggub, are called, ‘the curious customs and conversations of its local characters’. For though the town is (in the very best sense of the word) a backwater, it is a backwater brimming with life, and briny with salty individuality.

Under the spell cast by the play’s two narrators an evening spent with the theatre’s players becomes a whole day in the world beneath Milk Wood where, between sunrise and sunset, between the top and sea ends of the town, all life is to be found in the dreams, hopes, disappointments, tittle-tattle, and songs of its people. In Llareggub, love can be chaste, unrequited, or skirts-over-the-head noisy; marriage can be a merry-making or a murder in the making; ghosts walk, memories bring both comfort and regret; the selfish heart never opens but the pub never closes; reputations are picked apart in the gossip around the town pump, and the secrets of letters are picked over by the steaming kettle and curiosity of the postman and his wife.

Under Milk Wood is a poem of the extraordinary and the everyday: often comic, occasionally tragic, frequently sensuous, and not a little drunken, life in Llareggub is bucolic and brutal by turns, bright with colour and sensation, and always, always lyrical.
