Teddy Bear Zip Wire at St Oswalds

The Boxing Day Teddy Bear Zip Wire will run again this year. Cuddly bears, dolls, dinosaurs and any other brave toys are welcome to come along on Boxing Day  between 11am and 2pm, to St Oswald’s Church Tower for the ride of their lives!

Christmas comes early for flower club members in Ellesmere

‘A Cheshire Christmas’ with all its thrills was brought to North Shropshire on the evening of November 23 when Ellesmere and District Flower Club members and friends were thoroughly entertained by NAFAS National demonstrator and renowned Cheshire florist, Ian Lloyd, from Wilmslow. It was a delight for chairman Sylvia Williams to welcome Ian on his first visit to the Ellesmere club and his expertise in arranging flowers and telling interesting stories of his life in the world of flowers gave the audience a taste of the many aspects to his long career which began as a child helping in the family business.

Oswestry Rotary Club Tree of Light switch on

Oswestry Rotary Club’s annual Tree of Light Appeal got off to a great start when the tree lights were switched on outside Sainsbury’s store in Oswestry by Oswestry entrepreneur Professor Dr Peter Starbuck recently. Accompanied by the valiant Porthywaen Silver Band, a hardy crowd of shoppers braved the cold to join in the Christmas carol singing to launch this year’s appeal.

Father Christmas' tour of Oswestry is revealed

Christmas is nearly upon us and is heralded every year with the town’s Christmas Parade organised by the Oswestry Borderland Rotary Club. At the parade on Saturday, the Oswestry Cambrian Rotary Club will be entering their newly built sleigh and Father Christmas to be the final float in the parade.

Chirk Christmas Lights Switch On

Chirk Celebrations and Lights Committee are eagerly looking forward to the culmination of all their hard work of fundraising throughout the year when the Chirk Christmas Lights are switched on by an important guest on Saturday, December 2, at 6pm at the Coronation Oak. This year the honour of doing so has been given to a VIB - Very Important Bear! Russ the Bear - who is Chirk Library’s mascot will be making a special appearance to come and light up the town. His wonderful death-defying act of performing a zip wire challenge from the top of the church tower in the summer has earned the respect of the whole community who will no doubt all come to cheer him on again for his guest appearance.

Kinnerley lifesavers

Twenty-seven ‘lifesavers’ are now in the community of Kinnerley thanks to Oswestry Cambrian Rotary and the Oswestry Community Responders. Lead by volunteer Community Responder Effie Cadwallader, the group were able to put into practice what was demonstrated in the practical sessions. They also now have the ability to know what to do and how to recognise a heart attack, deal with severe bleeding and to practice resuscitation, cardiac compression and choking on baby, child and adult manikins.

Love is in the air at Selattyn

SELATTYN and Gobowen P3 team of volunteers carried out its first major public footpath improvement project in Selattyn on October 13. Led by Helen Beresford from the Shropshire County Outdoors Department, the team replaced an unsafe wooden stile and fencing with a modern galvanised steel kissing gate. The work has greatly improved safety on this much-used shortcut.

Ex-head brings greetings from Hong Kong to Oswestry Cambrian Rotary Club

Gary WRIGHT brought the greetings all the way from the Rotary Club of Hong Kong to Oswestry Cambrian Rotary and presented them with a club banner. Gary was a Rotarian with the Oswestry Cambrian club when he was the headteacher of the Adcote School at Little Ness – until he took on the role of founding headmaster of the Mount Kelly International School in Hong Kong.
